SIXTEEN

EVA

A gray-haired man with kind eyes and gentle hands comes to see me. With Naz hovering silently in the background while I lie quietly on the bed, the man takes my vitals and draws blood, then asks me a series of questions about how I feel and the injuries I sustained on the ship.

When he asks if I have any injuries that might not be visible, Naz stiffens, knowing what the real meaning behind that question is.

I answer with a firm, clear voice, though it’s all I can do to muster it. I’m so exhausted even speaking is difficult. “No. He didn’t touch me that way. He didn’t do anything inappropriate.”

Naz mutters, “Those bruises are definitely goddamn inappropriate.”

Then he starts to pace, cracking his knuckles and grinding his jaw.

After a few more questions, the doctor withdraws to converse in low tones with Naz in a corner of the room. I hear the words bed rest and fragile and get the distinct impression that I won’t be running a marathon anytime soon.

When the doctor leaves, Connor comes in. He draws a chair up to my bedside while Naz sits on the edge of the mattress and takes my hand.

“You feelin’ up to talking for a bit?” asks Connor gently, casting a worried eye at Naz, who’s staring at me in unblinking intensity, as if not quite believing I won’t disappear in a puff of smoke.

With my free hand, I make the thumbs-up sign.

“Attagirl. This won’t take long. I gotta head back stateside, but you and Naz are gonna camp out here for a while, until you’re up for traveling again.”

I say, “He didn’t tell me anything solid.”

When Naz and Connor share a startled glance, I clarify. “Killian, I mean. He was careful not to give me any information I could pass along. But he did say that he was risking millions of people’s lives for me. That was after he took me to the safe house. I don’t think he was supposed to do that. He also asked—hypothetically—if I’d kill one person if it would save countless others.”

It’s quiet for a while, the only sound the grinding of Naz’s back teeth. Then Connor says, “Uh-huh.”

“My point is that I don’t think either of those comments were random. I think whatever he wants from Dimitri has repercussions that could potentially affect a lot of people.”

“If you had to guess, any idea what that would be?”

I look at Naz, then back at Connor. “Most likely . . . weapons.”

Naz tightens his fingers on my hand. Connor sits back in his chair and folds his arms over his chest. They both stare at me, waiting.

I close my eyes, recalling several different meetings I was present for that Dimitri had with a variety of evil-looking men. They’d come to the mansion dressed in expensive suits or military uniforms, accompanied by an entourage of bodyguards and assistants, and drink whiskey and smoke fine cigars while young girls naked except for gags and leashed collars were exhibited for selection.
